The band feature members of Mod Revival Legends The Purple Hearts, The Chords and Long Tall Shorty....The sounds of the mod revival played by the people who wrote and recorded them,
The 79ers are Simon Stebbing (guitar), Kip Herring (voice/guitar), Brett Buddy Ascott (drums) and Ian Jones (bass). Throwback to 1979 and Revival mod is at its highest point with bands like The Purple Hearts, The Chords,
Long Tall Shorty and Secret Affair.
Simon Stebbing was the guitarist and one of The Purple Hearts main composers, co-writing authentic mod hymns such as 'Millions Like Us', 'Jimmy' and 'Frustration'. Having signed with Fiction Records the band released the album 'Beat That! 'In 1980, a classic unanimously acclaimed by criticism and whose themes would help define the sound of mod revival.
Buddy Ascott joined The Chords in 1979 after responding to an announcement from a weekly musical newspaper that sought a Keith Moon-like drummer. After demolishing a borrowed Drum kit at his audition, he was asked to join the band immediately.
In 1979, The Chords had a recording deal with Polydor Records and recorded classic singles 'Now its Gone', 'Maybe Tomorrow', 'Something's Missing' In My Street and
'The British Way of Life' and the album
'So Far Away'.
In October 1980 the Chords singer left the band. After many auditions looking for a substitute Kip Herring joins the band as lead vocalist in early 1981.
Kip had previously been a member of punk legends
The Vibrators and had sung the last two singles
with The Chords,
‘One more Minute’ and ‘Turn Away Again’.
Ian Jones started playing bass with The Reactions with future Long Tall Shorty member, Steve Moran.
Ian joined Long Tall Shorty and appeared on the singles
'On the Streets Again', Shine On Me, This Town and the albums “A Bird In The Hand” and Completely Perfect" also recording the parody single 'Anti Cnd' as Joe Public.
In 1999 he was called up to join Ian Page (ex Secret Affair) in his new band The Affair. This took Ian to many places around the world playing Secret Affair music as well as new material written for The Affair.
Among the former members of 79ers is Bob Manton (Purple Hearts singer), and, the band had a guest to play live at Sex Pistols legend Glen Matlock.
Band members have also previously recorded with Ronnie Wood, Paul Weller, Steve Marriott, PP Arnold or Mike Evans (The Action) among others.
